How to SPRING into Spring, without the aches and pains.

There’s something about spring that makes you want to move more, brighter evenings, the garden needs more attention, relaxing walks get longer or maybe you’ve signed up for a new class or decided it’s time to get active again.

As physiotherapists, we love to see it, but what we worry about is the sudden back twinge. The knee that starts complaining. The shoulder that didn’t appreciate an enthusiastic afternoon of pruning.

Most of these injuries are completely preventable and we have a few tips that may help.

1. Ease yourself back in
Start gradually. Add intensity or distance slowly each week.

2. Warm up properly
Even 5 to10 minutes of mobility work makes a big difference.

3. Strengthen your core
A strong core supports everything else. This is where Pilates can be incredibly helpful.

4. Keep flexibility in mind
Tight muscles pull on joints. Regular stretching helps everything move more freely.

5. Listen to small warning signs
A mild ache today is much easier to treat than a full injury next month, consider booking a sports or deep tissue massage to help ease tired muscles.
